Here we are, Lithuania. Of course landscape knows no borders and the southern part of Lithuania looks like the north of Poland, yet I feel something special here. Maybe it’s the magic of the renewal, a new country, a new language, a new culinary tradition or maybe just a subtile shift in the light? My only certainty, the Lithuanian countryside is charming. The landscape is soft as a watercolor painting, unfold without lassitude fields and pastures, where cows and sheep peacefully grazing. Villages made of little colorful wooden houses, finding gently a place among the nature without crushing her. They discretely settle between the centuries old trees, who deploy their dancing shadows, offering a shelter from the burning sun to the humble walker. At a crossroad or in a beautiful garden it is not rare to witness some nicely crafted sculptures, representing religious symbols or a countryside scenery. On top of that, people are very welcoming here and often greet you back with a warm smile.
One evening, while we were walking toward the lake of Tolkūnai, a man called us from a window and asked us to come up for a drink. In an instant we were sitting on a chair, a cup of tea in the right hand, a cup of brandy in the left hand, some chocolate on our lap and all the family around us. They were so surprised to see tourists here in their little nowhere lost in Lithuania. Sure, it’s unusual for tourists to wander far from famous circuits. Most of them have neither the time nor the desire to adventure that far in the countryside. It’s where thru-hiking shines, taking the time, enduring the nonsense distance to discover a country in his authenticity, region after region, step after step. Let’s be honest, what is the last country you visited? What did you see from it? The capital, a couple of major place, maybe one hidden gem suggested by a close friend. Paris, London, Tokyo, to name just some capitals, which incarnate for many travelers a whole country. Don’t see it as a frontal criticism from a couple obsessed by their “superior” way of life. No, see this more as an invitation to a new experience. For your next vacation, just take a good pair of boots, a good bag with some essential gears and just walk. From your doorstep to somewhere that seduce you, maybe for few days or if you can for a couple of weeks. Go discover at human’s speed your surrounding. This surrounding, that most of us inhabit, but ignore totally. After sometime as a hobo you will have a fresh vision of your home and so many stories to tell to your friends.

Hier sind wir, in Litauen. Natürlich kennt die Landschaft keine Grenzübergänge und der südliche Teil von Litauen gleicht dem Nördlichen von Polen, doch es fühlt sich irgendwie anders an. Vielleicht ist es die Magie der Erneuerung, ein neues Land, eine andere Sprache, eine andere kulinarische Tradition oder vielleicht ist es einfach eine subtile Veränderung des Lichts? Sicher ist eins, die litauische Umgebung ist reizvoll. Die Landschaft ist weich wie ein Wasserfarbenbild, entfaltet Felder ohne Verdrossenheit und Weiden mit friedvoll grasenden Kühen und Schafen. Dörfer bestehen aus kleinen farbenreichen Holzhäusern, sanft eingebettet in die umgebende Natur ohne diese zu stören und zwischen hunderte Jahre alten Bäumen, welche ihren tanzenden Schatten entfalten, um den bescheidenen Wanderern ein Obdach zu geben von der sengenden Sonne. An einer Kreuzung oder in einem wunderschönen Garten ist es nicht selten liebevoll gestaltete Skulpturen zu sehen, die religiöse Symbole oder Landschaftsbilder repräsentieren. Darüberhinaus sind die Menschen hier sehr willkommenheißend und sie grüßen oft mit einem warmen Lächeln zurück.
Eines Abends, als wir Richtung See von Tolkūnai liefen, rief uns ein Mann vom Fenster zu und lud uns ein etwas zu trinken. Im Nu saßen wir in einem Stuhl, einen Tee in der rechten, einen Weinbrand in der linken Hand, Pralinen auf dem Schoß und die ganze Familie um uns herum. Sie waren so überrascht Touristen hier zu sehen, in der Pampa von Litauen. Sicher, es ist unüblich für Touristen weit entfernt von bekannten Routen zu wandern. Die meisten von ihnen haben weder die Zeit noch den Wunsch des Abenteuers so fernab auf dem Lande. Das ist wo Thru-Hike erstrahlt, sich Zeit zu nehmen, die unsinnige Distanz auszuhalten, um ein Land in seiner Echtheit zu entdecken, Gebiet nach Gebiet, Schritt für Schritt. Lasst uns ehrlich sein, was war das letzte Land, das ihr besucht habt? Was habt ihr davon gesehen?
Die Hauptstadt, einige Hauptplätze, vielleicht ein verstecktes Juwel empfohlen von Freunden. Paris, London, Tokyo, das sind nur ein paar Beispiele, welche für viele Reisende das ganze Land verkörpern. Nehmt das nicht als Angriff von einem Paar besessen von ihrem „außergewöhnlichen“ Lebensstil. Nein, seht es mehr als eine Einladung für neue Erfahrungen. Warum nehmt ihr nicht ein gutes Paar Wanderschuhe und einen ordentlichen Rucksack mit der wichtigsten Ausrüstung für euren nächsten Urlaub und wandert einfach. Von der Türschwelle irgendwohin wo es euch gefallen könnte, für wenige Tage oder wenn ihr könnt für ein paar Wochen. Entdeckt in menschlicher Geschwindigkeit eure Umgebung. Dieses Umfeld, was die meisten im Alltagsstress ignorieren. Nach einer Weile als Landstreicher werdet ihr einen frischen Blick auf eure Heimat haben und so viele Geschichten, die ihr euren Freunden erzählen könnt.

Nous voilà en Lituanie, bien sûre les paysages ne connaissent pas les frontières et le sud de Lituanie à de nombreux traits en commun avec le nord de la Pologne, et pourtant. Peut-être est-ce la magie du renouveau, un nouveau pays, une nouvelle langue, de nouvelles traditions culinaires ou peut-être est-ce la lumière? Ce qui est sûre c’est que la campagne Lithuanienne à un charme tout particulier. Les paysages à la douceur d’aquarelles, déroulent sans lassitude champs et pâturages où vaches et moutons paissent paisiblement. Les villages fait de petites maisons de bois colorées se succèdent sans jamais écraser la nature. Ils se logent discrètement entre les arbres centenaires qui se déploient avec vigueur, apportant à l’humble marcheur le couvert de leurs ombres mouvantes. Régulièrement à la croisée de chemins ou dans un jardin fleurie, l’on découvrent des statues finement sculptées dans le bois, offrant à voir motifs religieux et scènes bucoliques. Pour ne rien enlever au charme de ce décors semblant figé entre deux époques, les lithuaniens sont très accueillant et nous retourne souvent le bonjour avec un sourire chaleureux.
Un soir, alors que nous marchions en direction du lac de Tolkūnai, un homme nous a hélé depuis sa maison pour nous inviter à boire un coup. À peine installés sur la terrasse nous voilà un thé dans une main, un verre de Brandy dans l’autre, des chocolats sur les genoux et toutes la famille autours de nous. Ils étaient surpris de voir des touristes ici, dans ce nul part du sud de la Lituanie. C’est en effet inhabituel, beaucoup n’ont ni le temps ni l’envie de zigzaguer de hameaux en hameaux pour traverser plusieurs pays à pieds. Mais c’est ici que la randonnée longue distance prends tout son intérêt. Prendre le temps, accepter l’effort et les distance roborative pour découvrir un pays dans toutes son authenticité, région après région, pas après pas. Soyez honnête, posez-vous la question. Quel est le dernier pays que vous avez visité? Qu’en avez vous vu? Probablement la capitale et peut-être quelques villes célèbres. Paris, Londre, Tokyo, c’est villes incarne a elle seule, pour de nombreux voyageurs, un pays tout entier. Ni voyez pas la une critique acerbe de deux personnes obnubilées par leurs mode de vie “supérieure”, non. Voyez ceci comme une invitation à une expérience différente. Pour vos prochaines vacances vous pouvez par exemple simplement prendre de bonnes chaussures un sac et marcher de votre palier vers vôtre capitale où dans n’importe quelle direction qui vous séduit. Découvrez à pas d’homme votre environnement directe, celui que bien souvent nous habitons sans rien en connaître. Après une ou deux semaines à vagabonder vous aurez une toute nouvelle visions des paysages familiers et de nombreuses histoires à raconter.
